Laura Gelfand received her PhD in Art History from Case Western Reserve University in 1994 after earning an MA from Williams College and a BA from SUNY at Stony Brook in Art History. Before coming to USU she served for two years as the Associate Dean of the Honors College at The University of Akron where she joined the faculty in 1997 and was promoted to Professor in 2005. She served as Head of the Department of Art & Design at USU from 2011-2018. She will be a Fulbright Fellow in the Department of the History of Art at the University of York during the 2018-2019 academic year.
- Recent Publications
Laura Gelfand’s research centers on the art of the late medieval and early Renaissance in Northern Europe and she has published widely on a variety of topics including devotional portrait diptychs, the meaning and intent of noble commissions, and devotional interaction. She is co-editor of the series Art and Material Culture in Medieval and Renaissance Europe, published by Brill (Leiden), and edited the volume Our Dogs, Our Selves: Dogs in Medieval and Renaissance Art, Literature, and Culture, which was published with Brill in 2015.
