About Me

Following her formation in political science at Galatarasay University, Zeynep Ertuğrul entered École normale supérieure in Paris through “International Selection.” She obtained her MA degree in “Interdisciplinary Practices in Social Sciences” at ENS-EHESS. She started 2019 with her Ph.D. entitled “Preaching the Republic: The Spokespeople of the Single-Party Rule in Turkey at Berlin Graduate of Muslim Cultures and Societies (Humboldt University of Berlin) under the supervision of Hannes Grandits and Ulrike Freitag. Since 2020, she has been enrolled at the EHESS as a part of a Ph.D. cotutelle under the supervision of Hannes Grandits and Marc Aymes. In her project, Ertuğrul explores the circulation of knowledge, ideas, and concepts central to the normalization and legitimization of the order brought by Turkey’s newly established republican regime. Ertugrul concentrates on the Halk Hatipleri (People’s Preachers) as local spokespeople of the single-party regime and studies the speeches they delivered all around Turkey between 1931 and 1950. The study of People’s Preachers’ public addresses offers a privileged prism to explore the intellectual foundations of the post-Ottoman Turkish Republic by using non-canonical texts and decentering the analysis from the political and intellectual elites acting as norm-makers and policymakers. The People’s Preachers as political brokers, and their public addresses, when considered dialogic speeches, allow a multilayered understanding of the social and political process in early republican Turkey.
