Elaine McGirr is a Reader in Theatre & Performance Histories at the University of Bristol. Her work explores the interconnections of the state and the stage in Restoration and eighteenth-century Britain; the centrality of the theatre to public (and private) life; and the development of celebrity culture in the eighteenth century.
