About Me

Dr. Deniz Avcı Hosanlı graduated from Başkent University, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (with full scholarship) in 2009 with a secondary place in graduate listing. She completed her master’s degree in Restoration (Conservation of Cultural Heritage) at METU, Department of Architecture (2012) and completed her PhD in History of Architecture at the same university and deparment (2018) with her dissertation titled “Housing the Modern Nation: The Transformation of Residential Architecture in Ankara during the 1920s.”

Having worked in various restoration, architectural and interior design projects, from 2018 to 2021, Avcı Hosanlı worked part-time as instructor/lecturer at Bilkent University, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design. As of 2021, she has been working full time as Dr. Visiting Scholar at the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at Kadir Has University, giving lectures on history of architecture, interior design studio and environmental analysis techniques.

Her research interests include traditional residential architecture (of Ottoman Empire) from the 18th and 19th century and their preservation, conservation of cultural heritage with adaptive re-use approach, early Republican era housing production under the influence of modernism and consequent effects of these on urban transformation and immigration/emigration movements, housing production/transformation shaped by users/actors, and spatial transformations of historic buildings with analysis on interior spaces. As of 2020, Avcı Hosanlı has been working on the research project titled “Architects Who Left Traces on Ankara” and operates as a committee member in the non-profit organization “DOCOMOMO – Modern Interior in Turkey.”
