About Me

Abigail Shimer is a PhD student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her research examines the beginning of the modern homeschool movement in the United States, focusing on family structure, religious beliefs, and the politics of education. Abigail has worked as a teaching assistant for UNC-Greensboro, teaching various survey classes as well as courses on women’s history and the history of childhood in the United States. Interested in serving with her peers, Abigail helped to found UNC-Greensboro’s Graduate History Association, serving as its founding vice president and then later as president and treasurer. She has won several awards and fellowships, including the Paul Mazgaj Departmental Service Award and the Allen W. Trelease Graduate Fellowship.
