About Me

I specialize in nineteenth-century United States history, with a particular focus on the Civil War and Reconstruction eras and African American history.  I am currently working on a manuscript tentatively titled “Making Space,” which explores the ways black and white Southerners used public city space to remake citizenship after the Civil War.  My interests more broadly include the nature of the public sphere in the American context, urban development, and the changing definitions of citizenship in the United States.  I’m also involved in public history projects including the Freedmen and Southern Society Project and the Civil War Trust.  Originally from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, I received my BA from the College of William and Mary, and my PhD from Yale University.
