About Me

I am interested in environmental history and how it applies to public life and humanities education. Before moving to Pennsylvania, I taught at Dalhousie University as well as the University of Alberta, McGill University, and Aarhus University. My courses range widely across North American history, Canadian Studies, and Environment and Sustainability.

My work also ranges from place biography to proposing new environmental narratives for historic sites. I am particularly interested now in the role of the humanities in sustainability education, and historical inspirations for post-industrial society. My new project, “Islands of Canada: Canada as a coastal nation,” explores the environmental history and political significance of Canada’s Atlantic coastlines. A second project, “Cities by the Sea,” looks at how urban communities such as Halifax, Nova Scotia can exist sustainably along the seaboard. I am active online as an editor for NiCHE: The Network in Canadian History & Environment.
