About Me

I’m a historian of criminal law in the nineteenth-century British empire. My current book project, Unsound Empire: Guilt and Responsibility in British Imperial Law, uses homicide cases from colonial Canada, Australia, India and England to interrogate how changes in mental science and understandings of the ‘primitive’ inflected common law concepts of criminal responsibility and practices of governance in the British world. Other interests include the histories of medical jurisprudence, colonial detectives, and arson.
