About Me

Danielle Shapiro, Ph.D.  is the author of the first biography of John Vassos, John Vassos: Industrial Design for Modern Life. She has a Ph.D. from the Department of Art History and Communications Studies from McGill University during which time she was engaged as a research fellow on the Culture of Cities project. Her awards for research on media history and design include a teaching fellowship at Harvard University, a Fulbright Award, postdoctoral fellowships at the Archives of American Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and at the Wolfsonian Museum. From 2008 to 2014, Dr. Shapiro was a Senior Program Officer at the National Endowment for the Humanities where she oversaw grant projects for museum exhibitions and documentary films. She was a curatorial assistant at the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian National Museum of Design, which spawned her career long interest in industrial design. Dr. Shapiro has published in the MIT journal Design Issues, the Archives of American Art Journal, the Encyclopedia of 20th Century Photography, and the Encyclopedia of Documentary Film and has taught media studies at American University, Hunter College and Emerson College.  Her book website is www.johnvassos.com.
