Carrie Allen Tipton writes, podcasts, and lectures about music, religion, arts, and culture. She has written for Pop Matters, Deep South Magazine, Southern Foodways Alliance, W.W. Norton’s Avid Listener, Religion Dispatches, New Encyclopedia of the South, Black Music Research Journal, and Journal of the Society for American Music, among other places. She is a former book reviewer for Kirkus Indie and works as an academic editor.
A frequent public speaker, Tipton appeared on a panel at Nashville’s inaugural WriterFest in Fall 2018. She has lectured and appeared on panels for arts organizations such as Bach Society Houston, Eroica Trio, Houston Ebony Opera Guild, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the National Museum of African American Music, along with universities, schools, and churches. Tipton has presented research at the Southern American Studies Association, Society for American Music, Society for Ethnomusicology, and NYU’s Music and Film Conference. Tipton holds a PhD in Musicology and degrees in Music Education and Piano Performance. She lives in Nashville, where she hosts and produces the Notes on Bach podcast sponsored by Bach Society Houston. Her book From Dixie to Rocky Top: Music and Meaning in Southern College Football uses fight songs to explore larger themes of race, regional identity, and the commodification of school spirit. It is under advance contract with Vanderbilt University Press.
