About Me

I have been a professional historian for two decades. My expertise is in how American cultural institutions and the mass media shape racial, religious, and gender identities. I am a native of Philadelphia, and have been at the University of South Carolina since 2005.

Recent Publications

I am the author of two books, Black Culture and the New Deal: The Quest for Civil Rights in the Roosevelt Era (UNC, 2009), and Red Hot Mama: The Life of Sophie Tucker (UTP, 2018). I have authored many pieces in trade media (Salon.com, L.A. Times, Chicago Tribune), as well as academic journals.

Media Coverage
I speak regularly on radio programs and have appeared on C-Span twice.
