About Me

I am in the final year of my AHRC funded PhD at Lancaster University. My current research seeks to understand the experiences of individuals who were confined as patients in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century asylums. My research draws on medical records, objects, photographs, architecture and spatial analyses to explore the ways in which patients rejected, coped with or engaged with medical authority. I am particularly interested in the relationship between medical authority and patient agency, illness narratives, the material cultures of medicine, emotional experiences of medical treatment and the spatial context of medical encounters.
