About Me

I primarily investigate issues in African American History, Museum Studies, Urban History, and Heritage Tourism. I coordinate the public history program at Appalachian State University, and my work and courses frequently involve collaboration with community organizations and local museums. I’m currently working on a project that investigates the connection between Flint’s attempts at downtown revitalization, and the roots of the Flint Water Crisis. I received my PhD in History from the University of Minnesota, and my BA in History from Michigan State University.

Recent Publications

From Storefront to Monument: Tracing the Public History of the Black Museum Movement (University of Massachusetts Press: 2013). Received the 2015 National Council on Public History Best Book Award.
