About Me

I am a historian of American response(s) to the Holocaust at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the author of the authoritative history of the War Refugee Board, Rescue Board: The Untold Story of America’s Efforts to Save the Jews of Europe (Doubleday, 2018).

I have a PhD in American history from George Mason University. My expertise is on US governmental response to the Holocaust, including the refugee crisis in the 1930s and 1940s, US private humanitarian aid, and the role of the US State and Treasury Departments.
