Sophie Littlewood is currently the Assistant Curator of The Portland Collection, one of the leading collections of fine and decorative arts still in private ownership. As well as being displayed in the historic rooms of Welbeck Abbey, seat of the Dukes of Portland, the collection is also shown in the a purpose-built gallery where over 4000 objects will be displayed in three rotations over a ten year period.
Sophie completed her BA, MA and PhD in History of Art at the University of York. Her doctorate thesis explored the ways in which armour and its representations within portraiture facilitated and also dictated representations of elite masculinity in Elizabethan England. It aimed to show that armour should be seen as a dynamic agency rather than an inactive object.
She is interested in early modern armour, portraits and dress as well as country house collections.
