About Me

I am a history professor at Ohio State University, specializing in American history from the Revolution through the Civil War era.  My doctorate is from Harvard University, and I am the author or editor of seven books and many articles.  I have published op-eds in HUFFINGTON POST, HISTORY NEWS NETWORK, and the CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER, and I have been interviewed for approximately fifty television programs, podcasts, radio programs, and newpaper articles.  My areas of expertise include the Civil War, antebellum America, nineteenth century America, women, gender, race, material culture, environment, landscape, and region.
