About Me

I am a broadly educated historian of the United States. I have written extensively on the history of American culture and politics, and have a special interest in historic maps. My newest project, A History of America in 100 Maps, explores the relationship of history and geography from the voyages of discovery to the present day. I teach courses in the American Civil War and Reconstruction, war and the presidency, American thought and culture, the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, the Great Depression, and the Cold War. I have held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Henry Huntington Library.

From 2010-2014 I contributed fourteen articles to the “Disunion” series at the New York Times, commemorating the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War.

You can learn more about my work here and here.
