About Me

I am an historian of Africa specializing in the histories of eastern, central and southern Africa before the 20th century. I have conducted fieldwork among fifteen societies in five countries in eastern and south central Africa and regularly publish in the fields of history, linguistics, and archaeology.

I am currently researching two projects. The first combines linguistic and archaeological evidence with more familiar documentary archives to trace the politicization of pyrotechnologies, senses, emotions in central Africa over the last three millennia. The second involves a wider team of soil scientists, archaeologists, and ethnographers reconstructing the changing cultures of mobility across strategies climate shifts in central Africa over the last five millennia.

I am on leave in AY18-19 pursuing graduate training in archaeological sciences under the support of a Mellon New Directions Fellowship.
