- About Me
I am a historian of reproductive health, politics, and public health. My dissertation, “Banned in Boston”: The Battle over Birth Control in the Last State to Legalize It, 1879-1972, argued that activist infighting – not the Catholic Church – kept Massachusetts behind peer states in advancing reproductive health until the 1970s. I teach courses in the history of sex education as well as 19th and 20th century gender and public health history. A native Tennessean, I hold an A.B. degree in History from Harvard University (2001), a M.A. in History from Middle Tennessee State University (2015), and a Ph.D. from Boston University (2023). Before beginning graduate studies, I spent a decade as a professional development officer for Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union.
