- About Me
My area of expertise is the social and cultural history of the Middle Ages. In particular, I examine these topics through the lens of medieval education, tracing the lived experiences of teachers and pupils and the impact of education on society. I focus on elementary and intermediate instruction and institutions as these have been neglected by scholars and are seen as unconnected to the larger intellectual and cultural trends and achievements of the Middle Ages. I have published widely on the subject, including two books: Elementary and Grammar Education in Late Medieval France: Lyon, 1285–1530 (Amsterdam University Press, 2017) and Medieval Pedagogical Writings: An Epitome (Kismet Press, 2018).
My current research project is on the medieval year and how seasonal festivals and rituals helped create, maintain, and remake communities in western Europe (loosely defined) between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. I am also working on an article on future avenues of research on the education of medieval women and girls.
