I am a graduate student working on consular and diplomatic history between Madagascar and the United States before colonization in 1896.
I focus on three consuls posted in Tamatave between 1863-1898 : Finkelmeier, Robinson, Waller, researching their motivations, their daily lives and interactions with the Merina governors, Prime Minister Rainilaiarivony, the distant Department of State, their British and French consular peers. Their personalities had great impact on the way they understood consular affairs. Each of them interpreted consular duties differently.
I am striving to use underutilized indigenous sources.
