About Me

Emily Ruth Allen holds a PhD in Musicology from Florida State University. She is currently an Instructor in Music History and Southern Studies at the University of South Carolina. Her current project focuses on Carnival parade musics in Mobile, Alabama, inspired by her experiences marching in the parades during her high school and college years. This work has been supported by the Society for American Music, the Alabama Folklife Association, Frances S. Summersell Center for the Study of the South, and other institutions’ grants and fellowships. She has presented her research at the American Folklore Association, American Musicological Society, Society for Ethnomusicology, Society for American Music, the Southern Historical Association, the International Symposium on Festival Culture, and other conferences. Her broader research and teaching interests include American musics, public musicology, festivity and ritual, and age studies. She is also an active podcast host for Take on the South and the New Books Network, interviewing scholars in music studies and festive studies about their work. Additionally, Allen maintains cross-disciplinary service positions, serving as chair of the American Band Research Interest Group of the Society for American Music, reviews editor for the Journal of Festive Studies, and editorial board member of the Journal of Festival Culture Inquiry and Analysis.
