About Me

I am a historian of the ancient Near East, with ongoing research interests in early state formation, the nature of citizenship in ancient states, and participatory governance both in antiquity and in the present.  In my line of work it is necessary to learn the languages of one’s primary sources, so I have studied about a dozen extinct languages, as well as some living ones.  I have been teaching and doing research in my field for more than two decades.
