About Me

I research the diversity of America’s suburbs. My first book is The Working Man’s Reward: Chicago’s Early Suburbs and the Roots of American Sprawl (Oxford University Press, 2014)analyzing working-class homeownership from the great Chicago fire of 1871 to the race riots of 1919 and beyond. My second book is A People’s Guide to Orange County (University of California Press, forthcoming), a bottom-up history of the too-often-overlooked stories that have happened in this highly-touristed but little-understood space.

I received my Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University in 1995 and teach at California State University, Fullerton. I teach classes including The American Dream, Food Cultures, California Cultures, Stories of Los Angeles, and History of Suburbs.
