I earned a Ph.D. in history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I taught American history and women’s history for 25 years at a four-year regional comprehensive university in Wisconsin. I’m a co-founder and co-administrator of the Nonfiction Fans book discussion group on Facebook, and I’m currently working full time on writing.

I’m the author of a trio of books on American women in the Philippines: Prisoners in Paradise (University Press of Kansas), Citizen of Empire (University of Tennessee Press), and most recently Angels of the Underground (Oxford University Press).
