About Me

I am a specialist in the era of the American Civil War and an expert in the culture of the long nineteenth century.  I love to write and speak about American political culture, and over the last decade have written over 300 illustrated articles for the general public.

I am the founding editor of American Inquiry, an online magazine devoted to history and politics.  Please refer to the index page of American Inquiry for a listing of contemporary issues and the historical lens I view them through.

I hold a BA and PhD with distinction from the University of Chicago, and an MA from the University of Texas at Austin.
